New Sting Rays Brighten Buffalo Beach

Designed by local artist Michael Smither and commisioned by the Thames Coromandel District Council, this latest addition to the Whitianga beachfront promenade features specially developed colours from Peter Fell.

Stingrays are the taonga (treasure) of Mercury Bay iwi Ngati Hei and now these aquatic creatures are set in coloured concrete along a paved section of the Buffalo Beach coastline.

Peter Fell Ltd was contacted by the Council and developed a range of colours to suit what Michael Smither was trying to achieve. From these samples the final colours were chosen and the result speak for themselves, as can be seen in the pictures, already very popular!

The stingrays themselves were formed with stainless steel shapes and infilled with coloured concrete. In some cases Allied Ready Glow stones were added and the surface honed which will be visible at night.
