SuperBlack Stairs at The Imperial

On the recently completed Imperial redevelopment, Fearon Hay Architects have created a stairwell that echoes the history of the building yet is absolutely contemporary.

Using a black and white palette, the stairwell has been constructed using black steel sheets for both the balustrade and the risers, enclosed in white ceramic tiles. Concrete coloured with SuperBlack from Peter Fell creates the rich dark black tone for the treads and the landings that complements the steel perfectly.

Concrete always has a degree of variation and character and this brings to the space a raw element that is an important theme evident throughout the project.

A simple yet very effective use of materials for a great result.
